GET in early to secure a share of Bundaberg cane variety Q242
GROWERS interested in securing a supply of billets of Q242 from the Bundaberg clean seed plot are being called on to register with AgriServ Central.
“We’re asking growers for expressions of interest at the moment to see how many are interested in purchasing billet plants of this variety,” AgriServ Central’s Allan Royal said this week.
“We’re well aware of the problems our growers are facing with varieties that are smut and pachymetra resistant, and that’s why we’re putting in the effort to put three hundred to five hundred tonne here on the ground,” Mr Royal said.
The billets will be trucked from Bundaberg (early August).
“The cost to Mackay region growers will be the same that Bundaberg growers are charged, which is $100 a tonne for clean seed plus $10 for harvesting. Transport costs we’re guessing will be around another $100 a tonne at this stage.
“Therefore cost should be around $210 a tonne for billets plants landed in Mackay,” he said.
Expressions of interest close at the end of May 2012.
